Who is Alex Rezdan?

Alex Rezdan reading

That’s me, Alex Rezdan, in the photo above reading one of my flash fiction stories while I was living in Berlin. You can’t see them, but there was an enraptured and supportive audience of writers and readers in front of me. If you’re ever in Berlin, do yourself a favor and look up Whisky & Words (where this photo was taken) and Berlin Spoken Word. They’re always packed with amazing, creative people sharing their work.

When people ask me what I write, I tell them I’m a speculative fiction writer, though that usually requires further explanation for non-writers. I’m a huge fan of science fiction, magic realism, and a good whodunit and detective novel. A lot of my published short stories lean on the literary side, but I’m looking to shift harder into the genre categories in 2018. Since you’re already here, why not check out some of my published stories to get a taste of my writing style?

A little bit more about me…

I currently live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, but I’m originally from Los Angeles. I have lived in six countries since I started traveling in 2008, in this order:

  • Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City)
  • Singapore
  • Indonesia (Jakarta)
  • Colombia (Bogota)
  • Germany (Berlin)
  • Cambodia (Phnom Penh)

Some fun facts about me:

  • I used to work as a sound mixer/boom operator for film and TV, which is what took me to Vietnam in the first place so I could work on a Vietnamese soap opera and feature film.
  • Because of the films I worked on, I also got to visit England to chase crop circles for three months, Sri Lanka to investigate gemstone mining, and China to document the tearful return of “Charlie Two Shoes.” (In addition to being able to see Greece, Vietnam, and several US states in ways few tourists can.)
  • I worked as a DJ and music director while living in Jakarta.
  • I’ve had several different jobs in my travels, which have helped me accumulate the skills necessary to freelance when needed: copy writing, SEO, web design, customer support, sound design, music production, and editing/proofreading.
  • I can play and used to teach guitar, bass, drums, and piano. I also learned how to play flute and cello, though I haven’t touched either since I began traveling.
  • Thanks to procrastination, I have learned several “useless” things that I like to call “procrastination skills”: juggling, magic tricks, skateboarding, origami, and how to solve a rubik’s cube.
  • I’m addicted to all forms of storytelling: novels, short stories, films, TV shows, anime, manga, comics, video games… I embrace all mediums in search of good stories, so if you want a recommendation on any, just ask!
